Alice A. Bailey And Soul Contact

In her writings Alice A. Bailey (AAB) used the term “soul contact” 184 times and “contact with the soul” an additional 41 times. It appears to be a cornerstone concept in her writings. Some quotes:

Therefore seek the light of your own soul, and know that soul as your director. When soul contact is established, your own soul will … introduce you to your Master.

A Treatise on White Magic , THE AWAKENING OF THE CENTRES

Meditation is so oft regarded as the means for establishing soul contact. People oft forget, however, that this contact is brought about very frequently by an inner reflective attitude of mind, by a life given to service and selflessness, and by a determination to discipline the lower nature so that it may become a true channel for the soul.

The quality and the major characteristic of the soul is light. Therefore, if that light is to be used and that quality expressed by the disciple and the worker, he must first of all achieve a recognised contact with the soul through meditation.

This astral body must be regarded by him as his response apparatus to the world of sensation and as the only instrument whereby his soul can contact that level of expression—temporary and non-lasting as it may be. The disciple must, therefore, establish contact with the soul and do this consciously and with the needed emphasis and so carry soul light to his own astral body, learn to focus it there in the solar plexus centre, and from that point of achievement proceed to work upon the astral plane at the arduous task of dispelling glamour.

An esoteric school is one in which the relation of the soul, the spiritual man, to the personality is taught. It is the major line of approach to the student, and soul contact becomes his first great endeavour. He comes to know himself and struggles to work as a conscious soul and not just as an active personality.

Soul contact is subject addressed by a number of New Age writers and will be the subject of future posts.

You are welcome to post your comments and understanding of soul contact.

Alice A. Bailey and the Overshadowing of Jesus Christ

Alice A. Bailey (AAB) had some interesting things to say about what she described as the overshadowing of Jesus Christ. She quotes Helena P. Blavatsky (HPB) to introduce the concept of a human being “overshadowed by a great adept”:

“When a man has reached a certain development and can be of service to the world, cases occur when he is overshadowed by a great adept, or—as in the case of H. P. B. —by One greater than an adept.” -A Treatise on Cosmic Fire , 3. THE SOLAR ANGELS, THE AGNISHVATTAS. – Part 3

Then she goes on to say that this was the case with Jesus

“…a disciple will return into incarnation occasionally so as to fit into the plan of a greater than himself.  When a messenger of the Great Lodge needs a vehicle through which to express Himself, and cannot use a physical body Himself, owing to the rarity of its substance, He will utilise the body of a disciple.  We have an instance of this in the manner the Christ used the body of the initiate Jesus, taking possession of it at the time of the Baptism. Again when a message has to be given out to the world during some recurring cycle, a disciple of high position in a Master’s group will appear in physical incarnation, and be “overshadowed” or “inspired” (in the technically occult sense) by some teacher greater than he.”

A Treatise on Cosmic Fire , VI. EFFECTS OF SYNTHETIC MOTION – Part 1

The idea is that Jesus of Nazareth, a human being, was overshadowed by the Christ – a greater being – and together in one body they accomplished the mission that is recorded in the New Testament. Author Joseph J. Dewey (JJD) wrote on this overshadowing that:

Alice A. Bailey on the Atomic Bomb

Not every modern student of Alice A. Bailey’s writings may be aware of what she said about the atomic bomb (still a very new thing at that time). I think she had some positive views on both the atomic bomb and atomic energy – she wrote “the wise, controlled use of the results of this scientific adventure…” The “scientific adventure” of course was the discovery of both uses of the atom, one destructive and one constructive (electrical power for example).

I will do a post later on her specific writings on atomic energy that may not be included here. As to the bomb she (or DK) envisioned it coming under the control of the United Nations to be used to deter aggression. Of course we know that never happened.

Author and long-time student of the AAB writings Joseph J. Dewey found a unique correspondence in the exploding of the first atomic bombs seeing it as the  The Sign of the Son of Man quoting this verse from the New Testament:

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened (or “obscure”) , and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.” (Matthew 24:29)

He writes:

The key to the meaning of the verse is in the Greek word for “heaven” which is OURANOS. The element Uranium was named after this. For proof one merely has to check any good dictionary and it will trace Uranium to OURANOS.

And:

The splitting of the atom and the releasing of the pure energy of Spirit is a perfect correspondence to the resurrection of Christ. The life force of the atom was released to enter the way of higher evolution just as the tomb of the Christ burst opened and released the Son of God. The splitting of the tomb of material matter is the one sure sign that the Son of man is the Son of God, and the knowledge given to man to split the tomb of the atom is the greatest scientific revelation given to man to date. It is a sign that we are not far from overcoming death as Christ did.
